Beta feature. Device Manager uses the Microsoft Graph beta API for workplace devices, which is subject to change without notice. It manages Wi-Fi access points and desk peripherals used by workplace check-in — it does not configure the tenant-wide Wi-Fi SSID allow-list or the Teams check-in policy, both of which remain PowerShell/Teams-admin-only. See Help for details.

Help — Device Manager

Overview

Device Manager creates and manages workplace sensor devices in Microsoft Places — physical hardware (Wi-Fi access points, desk peripherals, badge readers, occupancy sensors) that feed the Teams workplace check-in feature. It uses the Microsoft Graph beta API, since this capability has not yet shipped to the stable v1.0 endpoint.

What this app does NOT do

  • It does not configure the tenant-wide Wi-Fi SSID allow-list — that's Set-PlacesSettings -WorkplaceWifiNetworkSSIDList in the Places PowerShell module, with no Graph API equivalent.
  • It does not configure the Teams workplace check-in policy (Inform/Ask/Off mode) — that's New/Set-CsTeamsWorkLocationDetectionPolicy in Teams PowerShell, also with no Graph API equivalent.
  • Both of the above must be configured separately by a Teams/Exchange administrator before workplace check-in will work end-to-end, even after devices are registered here.

Sensor types

  • wifi — marks a device as a Wi-Fi access point used for building-level auto-detection. The device's MAC address is used as its BSSID.
  • occupancy, peopleCount, inferredOccupancy — desk/room occupancy signals.
  • heartbeat — reports whether the device itself is online.
  • badge — badge-swipe check-in devices.

Permissions required

  • User.Read — identifies the signed-in user
  • Place.Read.All — reads buildings/floors/sections/rooms for the place picker
  • PlaceDevice.ReadWrite.All — required to list, create, edit, and delete workplace devices (Beta permission)

All permissions require admin consent. PlaceDevice.ReadWrite.All is a new permission — if your organisation hasn't granted it yet, sign-in will prompt for admin consent.

Troubleshooting

  • Consent loop on sign-in — your tenant admin needs to grant PlaceDevice.ReadWrite.All on the Places Live app registration.
  • Devices don't affect check-in immediately — Microsoft documents a 24–48 hour propagation delay after configuring peripherals/devices.
  • Beta API instability — this endpoint can change without notice; if requests start failing unexpectedly, check the Microsoft Graph changelog.
